Isla Vista Through the Ages

UCSB officially opened in 1958 as part of the University of California education system. The university had a tumultuous early history; the 1960s were a time of protest and student activism, with many conflicts ensuing between the student body and administration. These protests eventually resulted in student riots and even resulted in the burning down of the Isla Vista Bank of America. As a result, the community came together to form the Isla Vista Community Council (IVCC) which worked to get many major Isla Vista institutions running and give the community a voice. This lead to the creation of the Isla Vista Parks and Recreation District (IVRPD), responsible for the creation of and maintenance of IV parks and community spaces. The IVRPD is still in operation today and manages the various parks of Isla Vista while advocating for more community involvement.

IVRPD and Parks

Over the years, IVRPD has worked hard to improve the Isla Vista community, using measures such as bonds, special taxes, and promoting IV cityhood efforts. Isla Vista continues to support the growing population of UCSB which now reaches over 24,000 students. The IVPRD and 25 different parks within the town have benefited the community tremendously and continue to be a resource to students and residents. There are hundreds of events held annually in the parks and volunteer efforts from the community help to ensure their well being so that future residents may benefit from this unique community for many years to come.

Recreation by the Numbers

The Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District maintains 23 of Isla Vista's parks and open spaces. Many of the parks feature different amenities such as picnic tables, beach views, sport facilities, amphitheaters, and bathrooms. With so many different amenities, anyone can plan their perfect date, birthday party, picnic, or workout without having to leave Isla Vista!
